ABU DHABI -- Valtteri Bottas beat teammate and 2017 world champion Lewis Hamilton to pole position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as Mercedes converted its impressive weekend pace into a front-row lockout for the season's final race.

All weekend Hamilton has looked like the Mercedes driver to beat but in Q3 Bottas' 1:36.321 was enough to lead the session, with Hamilton appearing to make a mistake at the final corner of his attempt at the end of Q3. Sebastian Vettel took pole, while Daniel Ricciardo knocked Kimi Raikkonen off the second row of the grid with his late lap.
