Lewis Hamilton pipped Sebastian Vettel to pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix by just 0.051s as Mercedes and Ferrari continued their close title battle.
Hamilton topped all three qualifying sessions and came under late pressure from Ferrari, but Vettel was just shy of finding the time he needed for a second straight pole position. Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen made it an all-Finnish second row, while Max Verstappen finished just 0.5s behind the leaders -- showing real progress for Red Bull and it's big Barcelona upgrade.
But the undoubted star of the session was local hero Fernando Alonso, dragging his McLaren-Honda into Q3 and then qualifying seventh on the grid to the delight of the locals in attendance.
