The FIA has explained the reasoning behind the decision to introduce Halo for 2018, saying the device "represents the best solution to cockpit protection currently in existence."
The decision to implement the device has been a controversial one, with Mercedes chief Niki Lauda claiming it will destroy the DNA of Formula One. The Halo is designed to reduce the risk of serious head injuries in F1 by offering drivers frontal protection against flying debris but has been unpopular with fans and some drivers.
F1's push for cockpit protection has gained momentum in recent seasons after several high-profile accidents and fatalities, with Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel testing a new concept -- the Shield -- as recently as the British Grand Prix.
