F1 champion Lewis Hamilton loses trademark battle over name 'Hamilton'

Lewis Hamilton has lost a three-year legal battle with a luxury Swiss watchmaker over the trademark 'Hamilton'.

The seven-time F1 champion had been trying to prevent Hamilton International from registering its brand in Europe, according to the Daily Mail. Hamilton's company, 44IP, had tried to void Hamilton International's application as it had been filed "in bad faith" and thwarted "fair competition". It was also claimed the trademark had not been put to use.

The European Union Intellectual Propery Office (EUIPO) ruled against Hamilton's company.

The Hamilton International name goes back to 1892, when the company was established in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
