Charlotte sees first Indy car at track in 20 years

CONCORD, N.C. -- IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden turned exhibition laps Friday at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the first appearance of an open-wheel car at the track since three spectators were killed 20 years ago.

Newgarden, who won his second title in three years last weekend, drove the Indy car that Team Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud raced in Sunday's season finale. He ran six laps and reached 107 mph on the hybrid oval/road course at Charlotte.

His exhibition was roughly 30 minutes after William Byron won the pole for the NASCAR race at 103.
