SEC passes rule banning transfers disciplined for 'serious misconduct'

The rule, which was proposed by Georgia, goes into effect immediately and is the first of its kind at the collegiate level.

“I think this is a reflection of the conference feeling this is the right step,” incoming SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said. “I think it’s a leadership opportunity.”

The rule is intended to prohibit student-athletes who have been subject to discipline by any previous college or athletic department due to serious misconduct. The SEC, in its amendment to SEC bylaw 14.1.19, defined “serious misconduct” as sexual assault, domestic violence or other forms of sexual violence. It only applies to action taken by any institution during the time the student-athlete was enrolled there and does not address legal measures taken against the student-athlete.
