Cielo 8th in 50 free at Worlds

Cesar Cielo finished eighth in the men’s 50m freestyle on Saturday at the 2017 FINA World Championships at Budapest.

Cielo, who swam at Auburn from 2005-08 and is the current world record holder in the 50m free, clocked a 21.83 during Saturday’s finals. The Brazilian’s world record of 20.91 from 2009 still stands as Saturday’s race was won in 21.15 by Caeleb Dressel of the United States. Bruno Fratus, who trains at Auburn, took silver in 21.27.

In the women’s 50m free prelims, Julie Meynen of Luxembourg finished 31st. The sophomore-to-be swam a 25.
