Louisville grabbed the lead in the 16th minute when Sean Totsch made a run down the right flank and sent a cross to the back post. Abdou Thiam headed the ball back across the six-yard box where Brian Ownby headed it into the net for the opening goal.
ATL UTD 2 nearly equalized in the 19th minute. Laurence Wyke made a run through middle of the field before laying off a pass for Jack Metcalf on the right wing.
