Kurt Benkert had a strong first preseason game, the kind that could have positioned him to seize the backup quarterback job away from Matt Schaub. Alas, he won’t get the opportunity now, as the team has finally confirmed his injury was serious enough to land him on injured reserve.

Benkert, 24, joined the Falcons in 2018 as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia and was impressive enough during an erratic preseason to earn a spot on the practice squad.
