This day in Braves history: the Braves/Padres brawl

Umpire John McSherry called it "the worst thing I have ever seen in my life.

"I've never seen violence like that. It's a miracle somebody didn't get seriously hurt. We were very lucky."

McSherry personally witnessed what has been described as "a fight that was occasionally interrupted by baseball", and one of the ugliest brawls in MLB history.

It all started with the first pitch of the game. Pascual Perez, starting pitcher for the Braves, plunks Padres second baseman Alan Wiggins. No one except Perez knows why he did it, but according to Padres starter Ed Whitson, it was undoubtedly intentional.
