The club invested quickly in the services of Smyly, which likely means they wanted to set the market early rather than bid later. However, the club is far from finished if they expect to compete with teams like the Dodgers next season.
However, that’s a dangerous game to play. Even though the Braves are set up for success for the foreseeable future, it doesn’t take a lot to turn any particular season into a nightmare. The best way to ensure against that is to strengthen the squad, and while signings like Drew Smyly are nice, there’s definitely more that needs to be done.
