PHILADELPHIA — Kyle Gibson went to the mound for the fifth inning at Citizens Bank Park Wednesday encouraged by how the previous four innings had gone. He might have needed the boost of confidence that provided.

Gibson’s outings in the month of July had been a touch inconsistent. He was coming off a start in which he went just 4.1 innings and allowed six earned runs in what became a 15-2 loss to the Cubs that set the tone for a dismal, post-All-Star break series for the Phillies.
