The Atlanta Braves placed right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver on the 15-day injured list Friday with a strained left oblique muscle.
Smith-Shawver, 21, made his major league and season debut Thursday and struck out four batters over 4u2153 scoreless innings against the Chicago Cubs. He gave up three hits and two walks before exiting the Braves' 3-0 win.
Atlanta recalled left-hander Ray Kerr from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Friday night's series opener against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
