The Atlanta Braves walked away with a 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night, as rookie Hurston Waldrep made history on the mound. The 23-year-old right-hander became just the second MLB rookie in the modern era to win his first four appearances of a season while allowing one run or fewer in each, according to OptaSTATS. The only other pitcher to accomplish that was Fernando Valenzuela during his iconic 1981 “Fernandomania” run.
Waldrep’s latest outing was his best yet. He threw seven scoreless innings, tying a career high with seven strikeouts while surrendering only four hits and one walk.
