Adam Maier’s baseball season finished how he wanted even though the nuts and bolts of it were far from what he desired.

The 20-year-old right-hander from North Vancouver made just three starts this season for the University of Oregon before arm trouble relegated him to the sidelines. Maier had internal brace surgery to stabilize the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow in April and expects to start throwing again in the coming weeks.

The Atlanta Braves weren’t deterred by any of that. According to Baseball America, Maier received a US$1.197 million signing bonus from the Braves after they picked him in the seventh round of last week’s Major League Baseball draft.
