Virgil van Dijk insists he is 'proud' of Holland's performance at the World Cup... after Louis van Gaal's side were knocked out of the competition on penalties by Argentina

Holland captain Virgil van Dijk says he is proud of what his side achieved at the World Cup after they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Argentina on Friday night.

The Dutch lost on a penalty shootout, having fought back from 2-0 down to equalise with the last kick in normal time.

Van Dijk was the first up in the shootout, but Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez pulled off a brilliant save to deny the Liverpool defender. Argentina went on to win the shootout 4-3.
