The Championship club are searching for a new boss after sacking Roberto Di Matteo on Monday just four months into his reign.

A host of names are being linked with the vacant job, including Brentford's Dean Smith and Huddersfield's David Wagner.

But Wilkins believes Bruce, who is unattached having left Hull in the summer, is the standout candidate.

"Steve is probably the favourite," said the former Villa assistant boss.

"Whether that goes down well with a few Villa supporters having managed Birmingham, I don't know.
