John Terry's decision to land his big jump from Chelsea in the Championship at Aston Villa is intriguing from both club and player perspective.

For Villa it can be considered a coup, gaining a central defender of unparalleled experience still of a quality to enhance Steve Bruce's selections. The wages are expensive by second-tier terms – and for a 36-year-old – but the lack of a transfer fee provides a substantial offset.

For Terry the move seemed less obvious. Subject of offers from the USA, where the money is matched by the sunshine, and China, where one year could prove financially transformative even for a man of his wealth, dipping into the Tuesday-Saturday grind of the Championship appeared unlikely.
