Steve Bruce has hailed John Terry’s application to fitness and joked that even when the former England captain won at golf he only celebrated with half a shandy.
Terry agreed to join Aston Villa after sharing rounds with Bruce in the Algarve and insisted the desire to play and win outweighed any financial reward.
The 36-year-old has signed a one-year contract worth a basic £60,000 per week but said he turned down more lucrative offers from the Premier League and elsewhere. For that, Bruce is grateful.

‘It’s a statement of intent to get someone of his calibre to come and be the big player we all know he is,’ said the Villa manager.
