Aston Villa add Iceland international Birkir Bjarnason to James Bree capture with Conor Hourihane set to follow

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Birkir Bjarnason.

The 28-year-old midfielder arrives at the club on a three-and-a-half-year deal from Basel. Bjarnason, an Icelandic international, has also had spells at Standard Liege, Pescara and Sampdoria.

He was a member of Basel's Swiss Super League title-winning squad in 2015-16 and was a key part of the Iceland team that reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, scoring his country's first ever goal in a major tournament against Portugal.
