Steven Gerrard got off to a winning start as the new Aston Villa manager, with Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings netting late on against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Villa looked to be heading for a frustrating draw under Gerrard who was greeted with a warm reception by home supporters before the match.

There was little between the teams in a low key encounter until Watkins struck in the 84th minute before Mings made the safe points five minutes later.
