The majority of fans opted to experience the return of football with fake crowd noise, Sportsmail can reveal, with 75 per cent of viewers watching Wednesday night’s matches on Sky Sports’ Main Event channel.
The Premier League followed the lead of the Bundesliga by offering up a feed with crowd noise for Wednesday's games between Aston Villa and Sheffield United, and Arsenal's trip to Manchester City.
Sounds for that feed – broadcast on Sky Sports Main Event – were taken from EA Sports' FIFA 20 video game.
The chants were then curated for inclusion during the game, with different songs and noises being played depending on the incidents on the pitch.
