Marc Overmars focused on Ajax as Dutchman distances himself from becoming new director of football at Arsenal: 'I might be on the list of candidates but it's not exciting yet'

Marc Overmars has cooled speculation linking him to a new role as director of football at Arsenal, saying he is focused on his project at Ajax over the next four years.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed on Wednesday the Dutchman had emerged as a leading candidate to become Arsenal's first ever director of football, with him currently holding the same position at the Amsterdam club.

Overmars, who retired from professional football in 2004, spent three years with Arsenal, winning the Double under Arsene Wenger in 1997-98, but the appointment of a new football figurehead is unlikely to be well received by the Frenchman.
