The UEFA Women’s Euros 2025 are officially underway, with Lia Walti and Frida Maanum going head-to-head on the tournament’s opening day.
Swiss captain Lia Walti led out her side at a sold-out St Jakob-Park to face Frida Maanum and her fellow Norwegians, having narrowly lost to the same opposition in the Nations League last month.
The tournament hosts took the lead this time, with Walti instrumental in the build-up to Nadine Riesen’s 28th-minute strike. Despite this and the home crowd advantage, Switzerland failed to capitalise on Norway’s slow start and paid the price.
Less than ten minutes into the second half, Ada Hegerberg inevitably headed home from a corner to equalise before a fluke own goal gave Norway the lead just a few moments later.
