Lens v Arsenal: How French side fell and rose since their last Champions League meeting

A lot has happened to Lens since they last played Arsenal - as they prepare for their first home Champions League game in 21 years.

Lens, on the back of their only French title, met Arsenal twice in the 1998-99 Champions League group stages, drawing 1-1 in France and then winning at Wembley, where the Gunners played their European home games at the time.

They met again the following season in the Uefa Cup semi-finals, with Arsenal winning 3-1 on aggregate to reach the final, which they lost to Galatasaray.

Since then, Lens have played once in the Champions League, going out in the first of two group stages the competition had in 2002-03, and have been relegated and promoted three times since, not always exclusively for on-the-pitch activities.
