Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith backs the Gunners to improve under Mikel Arteta despite the club failing to make any signings in the January transfer window... but insists that top four is still a tough challenge

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith insisted that the Gunners remain on track under Mikel Arteta despite making no new signings in the January transfer window.

The transfer window saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Folarin Balogun, Sead Kolasinac, Pablo Mari and Calum Chambers all head through the exit door at the Emirates.

But the club failed to bring in any reinforcements, leaving Arteta with just 18 senior players as they prepare to battle it out for a top four spot in the second half of the season.

However, Smith believes that the Gunners have learnt from their past transfer mistakes as they look to improve under the Spaniard.
