Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger backs Danny Welbeck to secure place in England World Cup squad following impressive recent form at club level

Arsene Wenger believes Danny Welbeck’s late-season flourish and versatility will be enough to secure a place in England’s World Cup squad.

Welbeck has scored five goals in six games for Arsenal, having rediscovered his rhythm and sharpness following a long struggle with injuries.

The 27-year-old striker, whose strike at CSKA Moscow on Thursday helped clinch a place in the Europa League semi-finals, has not started an England game for more than two years but was recalled last month by Gareth Southgate and won his 37th cap against Holland.
