UA newcomer off to high-flying start

FAYETTEVILLE -- Last year, a clearance of 14 feet, 9 inches was good for second place in the women's pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Arkansas freshman Lexi Weeks matched that Friday in her first college meet.

Weeks cleared 14-9 without a miss at the Randal Tyson Track Center to win the Arkansas Invitational.

It was a personal-best for Weeks, who cleared 14-7 1/2 to set a national high school record as a senior at Cabot High School last year. She made her first attempts Friday at 13-1 1/2, 13-5 1/4, 13-9 1/4, 14-1 1/4, 14-5 1/4 and 14-9 before missing three times at 15-1.
