Six decades ago, Arkansas and Michigan State vied for supremacy of the college football world, holding the top two spots in the AP Poll for the final seven weeks of the 1965 regular season.
That stretch started with Arkansas moving up to No. 1 for the first (and still only) time in school history after beating previous No. 1 Texas. The following week, Michigan State moved ahead of the Razorbacks thanks to an impressive road win over No. 6 Purdue.
Bowl losses — to LSU in the Cotton Bowl and UCLA in the Rose Bowl, respectively — prevented either team from capturing the AP national championship, but that’s still a far cry from where the two programs find themselves today at the bottom of their conferences.
