In the latest edition of rich guys in suits conspiring to ruin our beautiful game, the Big Ten brass is reportedly considering an idea to expand the College Football Playoff to 24 or 28 teams.

The proposed format would entail the elimination of conference championship games, and the allotment of an increased number of automatic bids. The Big Ten and SEC would each receive seven guaranteed spots, five each for the ACC and Big 12, two bids for Group of Five schools and a pair of at-large spots.

Here’s who would have been invited to the proposed Big Dance next year:

  • Big Ten: Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan
  • SEC: Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Missouri
  • Big 12: Arizona State, Iowa State, BYU, Colorado, Baylor
  • ACC: SMU, Miami, Clemson, Syracuse, Louisville
  • Group of Five: Boise State, UNLV
  • At-Large: Notre Dame, Army

In theory, this expanded field would provide opportunities for more programs to have a shot at the national championship.
