There’s no doubt that Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman has been all in on the Razorbacks for most of his life, but that wasn’t always the case.
In fact, the Oklahoma native was all Boomer Sooner after being born in El Reno, Okla., and raised in Canton. But a later move to Grove, just 70 miles from Fayetteville, before he started high school changed his allegiance.
That conversion coincided with one of the biggest upsets in Arkansas history – a 31-6 win over No. 2 Oklahoma in the 1978 Orange Bowl.
Pittman remembers thinking the national championship was there for Oklahoma’s taking, but Lou Holtz’s Razorbacks kept that from happening even down multiple starters.
