FAYETTEVILLE — As the Arkansas football team got pushed around during a 56-13 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday, it became clear to Razorbacks athletics director Hunter Yurachek what needed to happen the next day.
After a recommendation to university chancellor Charles Robinson and approval from the board of trustees, Yurachek fired sixth-year head coach Sam Pittman on Sunday. It ending the longest tenure for an Arkansas coach since Houston Nutt’s 10-season stint from 1998-07.
The move came as result of indications Pittman had “lost the team a little bit” after a 2-3 start to the season, Yurachek said during a news conference Monday.
