Former Arkansas pitcher selected in 1st round of MLB Draft

FAYETTEVILLE — Former Arkansas pitcher Jackson Rutledge was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft on Monday.

Rutledge, a right hander who pitched this season at San Jacinto College in Texas, was drafted 17th overall by the Washington Nationals. According to MLB.com, the suggested signing bonus for his slot in the draft is more than $3.6 million.

Rutledge (6-8, 250 pounds) had a 9-2 record and 0.87 ERA in 13 starts this season at San Jacinto. He struck out 134 batters and walked 30 in 82 2/3 innings.

Rutledge has signed a letter of intent to play for Kentucky next season, but is expected to sign professionally.
