HOOVER, Alabama - Vanderbilt coach Derrick Mason is psyched about his special teams. Sounds about right.
Mason, now in his third year at the usual Southeastern Conference cellar-dweller, improved on his first season, notching two league wins last year after a winless season in 2014. Another two wins added would be a boon for a school that has finished above .500 in the SEC two times since 1960.
That isn’t a typo. Vanderbilt has two in-conference winning records in the last 56 years. Special teams isn’t going to make it three. Though, to be fair to Mason, he has pieces in place elsewhere a 4-4 record is more likely than an 0-8 one.
