Commentary: Burlsworth Foundation right to honor Norm DeBriyn

The assignment was a column on Norm DeBriyn with a heavy emphasis on the early years of the Arkansas baseball program.

That’s coming, I promise.

But first there must be a tip of the cap to Borys Malczycki. His name was front and center in three straight interviews, including DeBriyn’s recollection of the recruitment of his first two scholarship players, Bruce Mitchell and Gerald Hannahs. Those two lettered from 1971-74 and were signed from the same Little Rock legion team.

When I called Bill Bakewell for DeBriyn stories, Malczycki’s name bubbled out again. Bakewell was one of the pitching regulars in 1977-79 when the Razorbacks burst on the college baseball scene as a new force.
