And now, with a once promising college career about to end, people are wondering why it did not work out between the coach and the quarterback in Tucson.
Sumlin was asked about Tate's career at his news conference Monday ahead of Saturday's Territorial Cup game against Arizona State.
Tate isn't even a sure thing to start for the Wildcats in that game.
