Long before Zane Gonzalez earned the nickname "Legatron" from his Arizona State football teammates, he was a skinny soccer forward whose best prospect after high school appeared to be at San Jacinto College (Pasadena, Texas), where his older brother played junior-college soccer.
"They told me they had a spot available if I wanted to go there," Gonzalez said. "That was an awesome feeling to know I could at least be competing somewhere. I'm blessed and very thankful to be here. I tell Coach (Todd) Graham that all the time."
Graham can't say enough good things about Gonzalez, who this week or next could become the major college career field goal leader (he needs five more makes) and also is bearing down on the FBS record for career kicking points (28 away).
