Former Arizona State baseball star Spencer Torkelson signed Tuesday with the Detroit Tigers for a reported major league bonus record $8.4 million.
Torkelson was the No. 1 overall pick in the major league draft on June 10.
Torkelson could be on the Tigers' 60-man roster for the restart of spring training, leading into a 60-game major league season beginning with a 30-man roster. He was a first baseman during his three-year ASU career but was drafted as a third baseman.
The Tigers also signed ASU third baseman Gage Workman, their fourth-round draft pick, for a $1 million bonus, well above slot ($571,000).
