ASU women hope to avoid 1st sweep by UA since 2000

The last time Arizona women's basketball even had a chance to sweep Arizona State was in 2004 and the Wildcats haven't pulled off two straight rivalry wins since 2000.

That was back when UA dominated the series, winning 14 in a row from 1994-2000. The pendulum began to swing in 2001, Charli Turner Thorne's fifth season at ASU, and the Sun Devils are 28-7 since, including Friday's 62-58 loss in Tucson. The death of senior center Shawntinice Polk in fall 2005 due to a blood clot in her lung had a long-term effect on UA's program, which was compounded by 17-year coach Joan Bonvicini being fired after the 2007-08 season.
