Over the next few weeks, I'll talk to Arizona State position coaches to find out what they learned from spring football.
Today: Devil-backers.
Coach: Shawn Slocum, first season.
What is a Devil-backer? The Devil-backer is a hybrid position in coach Todd Graham's attacking scheme, part defensive end, part linebacker. He mostly lines up as a rush linebacker on the boundary side of the field, although at times, the Devil-backer has lined up as a middle linebacker in certain sets. To play the position, a player needs to be versatile, athletic and explosive.
