The No. 15 Spartans recovered strong from a 3-9 (1-8 Big Ten) season the year before to finish 10-3 (7-2) and second in the Big Ten East. They would match up with Washington State in the Holiday Bowl and take home the trophy in a 42-17 victory over the Cougars.
