ASU defense suffocates UTSA, helps offense put season-opening win out of reach

The stadium crew shot off firework after firework. Arizona State football started off the Herm Edwards era with a bang, erupting to a 49-7 win over Texas-San Antonio.

While the Sun Devils racked up touchdowns, the win also stemmed from confidence that UTSA would not catch them.

"Oh, it was because our defense," offensive coordinator Rob Likens said. "It’s easy to call plays when you know they’re not going to score. So it made my job so much easier and stress-free when you look up and they're putting a zero on the scoreboard."

The Sun Devils' defense held UTSA to only two yards rushing.
