Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed’s status remains in doubt as Opening Day approaches

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo sent mixed signals on the availability of shortstop Nick Ahmed for Thursday’s opener in San Diego, first saying he expected him to play before later sounding less certain about him being ready.

Ahmed, who has been dealing with patellar tendinitis in his right knee, has played in just five Cactus League games since March 6. He missed Tuesday’s exhibition finale at Chase Field and has not played since March 24.

When first asked about it, Lovullo said there was a “strong possibility” that Ahmed would be in the lineup against the San Diego Padres.
