Diamondbacks’ Madison Bumgarner serves up four homers, departs after two innings

Diamondbacks left-hander Madison Bumgarner served up four homers before exiting after two innings against the San Diego Padres on Sunday afternoon, the latest alarming development for the club’s new $85 million ace.

Bumgarner, whose velocity already was down with an 88 mph average, was sitting 87.1 mph on Sunday. His average fastball velocity last season was 91.4 mph.

The performance raised questions about Bumgarner’s health, particularly after Fox Sports Arizona showed Bumgarner huddling in the dugout with manager Torey Lovullo, pitching coach Matt Herges and trainer Ryan DiPanfilo after the first inning.

The Padres had no trouble hammering the fastball -- or any of Bumgarner’s other pitches.
