Diamondbacks fall to Athletics, approach historic records for road defeats

Diamondbacks center fielder Ketel Marte caught Mark Canha’s drive, then crashed into the wall. As Marte stumbled, the ball trickled out of his glove and fell on the warning track. For a moment, it seemed clear to all parties involved that Canha was out. As it turned out, he wasn't.

Like most everything else over the past six weeks, the play and the call did not go in the Diamondbacks’ favor, helping pave the way to a 4-0 win for the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon. And like most of their losses lately, while they could point to one play or one sequence or one inning that sunk them, there were plenty of other reasons why they came up short.
