HOUSTON – As the trade deadline drew near, the Diamondbacks on Thursday continued their pursuit of Aroldis Chapman, reportedly awaiting word from the Cincinnati Reds on their offer for the hard-throwing closer.
The Diamondbacks were known to be doing due diligence on the Cuban left-hander earlier in the week and are intrigued by the possibility of adding him to the back of their bullpen. Chapman is under club control through next season.
Multiple reports said the Diamondbacks had made an offer and were waiting for a response from the Reds. A team source, however, made the talks sound less advanced, saying the sides were still in the “tire-kicking” stage, not to the point of exchanging proposals.
