D-Backs believe path to contention doesn’t have to include a teardown

LAS VEGAS – With Paul Goldschmidt and Patrick Corbin gone and A.J. Pollock soon to follow, the Diamondbacks have lost multiple pieces of the core they had built around over the past half-decade.

The departures not only have left them looking like a team that could have trouble contending in the near future, they beg the question of what should come next. For many, the question is: Why wouldn’t the Diamondbacks tear down and rebuild from the ground up?

It’s a strategy that has paid off handsomely for a pair of recent World Series winners in the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros.
