Brad Boxberger out as closer as Diamondbacks look to favor late-inning matchups

DENVER – Following a stretch of games in which the Diamondbacks have blown late leads seemingly at every turn, manager Torey Lovullo said prior to Monday’s series opener against the Rockies that he will eschew set bullpen roles in favor of late-inning matchups.

That means that in addition to right-hander Archie Bradley no longer being the club’s primary setup man that right-hander Brad Boxberger is out as closer. It goes without saying that it’s a scenario no club wants to grapple with in the midst of a pennant race, but it seemed Lovullo had little choice given how many games the Diamondbacks have given away in recent weeks.
