The Diamondbacks failed to sign their top pick, infielder Matt McLain, prior to today's 2 p.m. deadline and instead will receive a compensatory pick in next year’s draft.
Many in the industry viewed McLain as someone looking to sign a professional contract. Sources with three rival organizations said they went into the draft believing McLain would sign if their club had drafted him.
Sources on both sides of the negotiation have declined to speak on the record. It is unclear if McLain had a change of heart or if the Diamondbacks were unable to meet his demands – or if it was some combination of both.
