Torey Lovullo refers to the past four months as a “long runway,” a period of time between when he was hired as Diamondbacks manager in November and Tuesday, the day his job will begin in earnest with the first workout for pitchers and catchers.
In the span of an offseason, he landed his dream job, following a longtime friend and ally, General Manager Mike Hazen, from Boston to Arizona, and lost his father, Sam Lovullo, a well-known television producer who had been suffering from heart disease.
“He was alive to see the press conference, got a chance to experience all that,” Lovullo said.
